Storytelling
This is one of the most important skills for working in the creative industry. There is a lot to say about how good storytelling helps create empathy for the customer. But in the day-to-day, it’s what truly elevates the UX practice’s influence within the organization.

Making it relevant
Winning project
2012 Visualizing Global Marathon
Role
Graphic Designer in a team with Jeremias Volker, Julian Stahnke, Lionel Michel
For the 2012 Visualizing Global Marathon, we were given 2 days to create an information visualization of flight data from the past 20 years.
Our goal was to identify patterns and anomalies in the data that would correlate with well-known world events. After compiling a list of potential events, we meticulously examined the data, isolating those instances that exhibited clear patterns or disruptions. The most compelling narratives emerged when the data was easily interpretable or when it yielded captivating visuals, enticing the audience to delve deeper. We titled the poster ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas,’ drawing from worldwide recurring events and customs as the foundation of our storyline.

Sharing a vision
Client
Flux Federation (NZ), 2020
Role
Digital Product Designer
The energy retailer Flux Federation needed to overhaul their communications product. In 2020, the product manager and I kicked off the first phase of a strategic shift for the company. We presented our vision for a product solution that was based on a third-party integration. This vision was intended to create a shared understanding across the company and helped us secure funding for a year-long project.
Central to our success was a highly collaborative and transparent workflow. While we maintained close communication with our clients through monthly and then weekly catch-ups, we also committed to providing quarterly progress reports and predefined success metrics. These were presented both internally and externally.
In 2021, the integration with SendGrid was completed on time and within budget. As a result, clients were now able to view email triggers and edit content themselves. This marked the company’s first successful integration with a third party.
