2012 Visualizing Global Marathon

Role

Graphic Designer in a team with Jeremias Volker, Julian Stahnke, Lionel Michel.

Developing an information visualisation of 20 years of flight data that won in the 2012 Visualizing Global Marathon.

Context

For the 2012 Visualizing Global Marathon, we were given 2 days to create an information visualization of flight data from the past 20 years.

Approach

Our goal was to identify patterns and anomalies in the data that would correlate with well-known world events. After compiling a list of potential events, we meticulously examined the data, isolating those instances that exhibited clear patterns or disruptions. The most compelling narratives emerged when the data was easily interpretable or when it yielded captivating visuals, enticing the audience to delve deeper. We titled the poster ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas,’ drawing from worldwide recurring events and customs as the foundation of our storyline.
