Role
UX/UI Designer
Designing and producing a projection mapping for an interactive exhibit that engages visitors by illustrating stories of a former jail atop an architectural model.
Context
For me, holistic thinking also includes considering the experience or solution independently of the media or format. In exhibition design, stories are told within the physical space and with a comprehensive understanding of how media plays its part. I had the opportunity to learn and apply this way of thinking while working with the design studio SYNTOP in Berlin from 2012 to 2017. For the permanent exhibition at the Human Rights Centre in Cottbus, I assisted them in creating interactive exhibits.
Approach
During this project, we integrated both digital and analog interactive installations into the exhibit space, enhancing the visitor experience in unique ways. While the digital exhibits immerse visitors in the dark history of the former jail, the analog ones help to alleviate the emotional weight of the stories and provide opportunities for reflection.
My primary focus was designing and producing projections in the entrance area, highlighting different aspects of the jail’s history. Visitors could choose from seven distinct stories, each shedding light on various historical facets of the site.
The design process involved numerous challenges, from crafting compelling storylines and integrating the experience into the exhibition concept to overcoming technical limitations of projection mapping and ensuring alignment with style guides and lighting conditions.
